  • What is a Livestock Share?

In a livestock share, customers, or “shareholders” commit to purchasing a whole, half, or quarter of the animal in the spring by making a deposit. We then utilize that deposit toward the cost of raising the animal. In the fall the remaining cost is paid when the animal is butchered and delivered. Shareholders receive a variety of cuts and you can direct the butcher how you want the cuts prepared.

Farmers benefit from the financial support early in the season, while shareholders benefit from connecting with a local farmer.

Farmers benefit from the financial support early in the season, while shareholders benefit from connecting with a local farmer. This relationship allows shareholders to learn more about the farm, how animals are raised and where their food comes from! One family or several families can purchase the share to customize the amount of meat you receive.

Steer, Hog, Lamb and Poultry Shares

Delta Farm is excited to be raising 8 Black Angus Steers, 35 Berkshire Pigs and 8 Dorper Lambs and a rotational flock of 150 free ranged and pastured specialty bred “meat birds”.

The animals are field processed at various times in the year and are ready for deliver shortly thereafter. Beef and pork requires some aging and or curing time and delivery is a couple of weeks after field processing, cut and wrapping to your custom specifications.

When they are ready the animals will be delivered cut, wrapped and frozen to the farm. We will keep you posted about the actual date, giving you plenty of notice to arrange to pick up your processed animal.

Our animals are raised without antibiotics on quality feed and they forage for their snacks. They are raised in pasture free to move about, graze, wallow and forage.

You are welcome to come to the farm and meet the animals and see how they are raised. We ask that you call ahead or send us a message to arrange a time, but we are more than happy for you to come for a visit.

The final cost of the animal depends on “hanging weight”. That is the weight of the animal after it has been slaughtered and cleaned, but before it has been processed into the different cuts. We base the price on this weight and sell the animals for varied prices per lb. The final price per pound covers the cost of raising the animal, butchering, cutting, curing and wrapping. It is also an average of the different cuts. Note that local organic meat can sell for as much as $16/lb for prime cuts. By buying a whole or half animal you can be saving over 50% of the grocery store price.

We require a deposit at the beginning of the season and the remaining amount is due upon delivery. We will let you know ahead of time what the difference is.
